Makunduchi District Hospital, in Kiongoni near Jambiani in southern Unguja, is a public hospital serving roughly 100,000 people across the surrounding district with primary care, maternity and minor surgery. It has been substantially rebuilt with support from the UK-based Lady Fatemah Trust and Health in Practice Zanzibar (HIPZ) - a charity founded in 2006 after its founder found the hospital with 'no doctors, minimal drugs and broken equipment' - which funded a 28-bed maternal-health wing plus a new emergency department and laboratory block, inaugurated by the President of Zanzibar; the emergency unit alone has treated over 1,000 patients since opening.
