The Zanzibar Institute of Tourism Development (ZITOD), at Maruhubi, was established in 1992 as the Hotel and Tourism Training Centre under a UNDP/ILO technical assistance project (UNDP/ILO/URT/90/024) to build basic hotel-operations skills. Wholly owned by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, it was merged into the State University of Zanzibar system in 2016 under the State University of Zanzibar Act.
