Abeid Amani Karume International Airport sits about 5km south of Zanzibar City on Unguja Island and was known as Kisauni Airport, then Zanzibar International Airport, before being renamed in 2010 for the archipelago's first president. A major modernisation begun in 2011 replaced the old 21,000-square-metre apron with a 100,000-square-metre one, and a new Terminal 3 for international traffic opened in September 2020, lifting overall capacity to roughly 1.5 million passengers a year; in 2014 the airport handled 934,337 passengers. Carriers serving it include Kenya Airways, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Air France, alongside domestic operator ZanAir.
