Fidel Castro Secondary School in Wawi village, Chake Chake District, was built in 1963 under the Sultanate of Zanzibar as Sayyid Khalifa Secondary School, honouring the 9th sultan, before being renamed after the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution. For decades it was the only secondary school on Pemba offering Form 1 through A-Level science studies, and it remains the island's only high school teaching science subjects.
