Mkoani Port sits at the southern tip of Pemba Island in Mkoani town, which is the capital of both Pemba South region and Mkoani District and had about 23,719 residents at the 2022 census. Mkoani's harbour is the busiest on Pemba Island, with most ferries arriving from Unguja and the Tanzanian mainland docking there, and a new passenger terminal designed to handle over 1,500 travellers was built to bring the port up to international standards as tourism to Pemba has grown.
