Chake Chake, the oldest town on Pemba island, has been occupied for centuries and was a centre of trade and administration shaped by Arab, Persian and Portuguese influence. Its Old Fort traces back to fortifications built along the Pemba coast in the late 16th century, part of a wave of defensive construction as the island became contested between the Portuguese and Omani forces; it was later adapted and used through the colonial period. Today the fort's remains offer panoramic views over the town and coastline and rank alongside the nearby Jamituri Gardens as one of Chake Chake's key historic landmarks.
