The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), a unit of the University of Dar es Salaam based at Buyu near Mazizini, was established in 1978 as a postgraduate research centre. It began admitting undergraduates for a Bachelor of Science in Marine Sciences in the 2019/2020 academic year, becoming East Africa's only specialised marine sciences institute, and its new academic and administration building at Buyu was inaugurated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in January 2026.
