Hunga Reef sits as a roughly circular formation in open sea northwest of Zanzibar, its coral bommies rising from a sandy bottom between 10 and 17 metres. Compared with current-swept sites like Leven Bank, conditions here are usually calm, giving it a reputation as one of the better dives for newer divers.

The reef is visually dense — big bommies thick with coral, overhung by shoals of reef fish. Nudibranchs, cuttlefish and scorpionfish turn up regularly, alongside groupers, napoleon wrasse, snappers and batfish.

Several Zanzibar dive centers run trips here, including operators based around Nungwi.
