Shane's Reef sits right off Nungwi's northern beaches at depths of 12–16 metres. After dark it becomes something else entirely: Spanish dancer nudibranchs unfurling across the sand, octopus and cuttlefish actively hunting, and occasional sightings of guitar rays, frogfish and rare scorpionfish.

Multiple Nungwi-based operators run this after dark, usually as a short evening boat trip with a briefing beforehand. A night-snorkel version is also offered for non-certified visitors.

Dive centers generally recommend this for divers with some open-water experience already under their belt.
