About

A fishing village and beach on Unguja's southern tip, roughly 50km from Stone Town, where daily boat trips go out to see and swim with resident pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins; also a working Swahili fishing community, distinct from the 12th-century Kizimkazi Dimbani Mosque a few kilometres away.

Kizimkazi (officially Kizimkazi Mkunguni) is a fishing village on Unguja's southern tip that was once a walled town. Boats leave the village jetty before dawn for the shallow channel offshore where resident bottlenose dolphins, and less predictably humpback dolphins, are known to rest and feed; tours typically depart between 5am and 7am when the animals are most active near the surface. The 12th-century Kizimkazi Mosque, one of the oldest Islamic buildings on the East African coast, stands a few kilometres away in the neighbouring village of Dimbani.
