About
Chwaka Ruins Pemba is a Zanzibar historic site associated with archaeological site, ruins.
The Chwaka Ruins are the remains of a Swahili trading town on Pemba island, near the villages of Konde and Tumbe, occupied from roughly the 11th to the 16th century. Covering about 20 hectares, the site is considered among the best-preserved on Pemba, and excavations have uncovered the remains of four mosques, at least ten stone tombs, a substantial stone house and a harbour creek nearby, evidence of a once-thriving settlement engaged in trade and specialised agriculture. The ruins are signposted from the road and freely accessible to visitors.
