About

Tippu Tip's House is a Zanzibar historic site associated with historic house, architecture.

This late-19th-century Stone Town townhouse was the residence of the Zanzibari-Arab merchant Hamad bin Muhammad bin Juma bin Rajab al-Murjebi, known as Tippu Tip (c.1837-1905), a major figure in the East African ivory and slave trade. The house sits in Suicide Alley, in the Shangani ward, and is a fine example of a Stone Town merchant's palace, with an ornately carved wooden 'Zanzibar door' and wrought-iron veranda work that signalled the owner's wealth, plus black-and-white marble entrance steps. It remained a private residence until the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution and was later subdivided into flats; it is not formally open to the public and has fallen into a state of disrepair.
