About
St Joseph's Cathedral is a Zanzibar historic site associated with historic church, architecture.
St Joseph's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Baghani area off Kenyatta Road in Stone Town, built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898. Its design was based on Marseille Cathedral, though smaller, and its twin spires are visible from the sea and from elevated points across Stone Town. The tiles and stained-glass windows were imported from France, and the interior originally included painted scenes from the Old Testament. The cathedral remains in active use by Stone Town's Catholic community, with Sunday and occasional weekday masses.
