About
A Roman Catholic cathedral built 1893-1898 by French missionaries in Stone Town's Baghani area, its design modelled on Marseille Cathedral; its twin spires, visible from across Stone Town, make it one of the district's most recognisable landmarks and it remains an active parish church.
Built by French Roman Catholic missionaries between 1893 and 1898, St. Joseph's Cathedral modelled its design on Marseille Cathedral in France, though the Stone Town building is considerably smaller. While its twin spires are visible from raised vantage points across Stone Town, the cathedral itself sits tucked into the narrow lanes of the Baghani quarter and can be hard to find on foot. It remains a working parish church, with several Sunday masses and occasional weekday services.
