About
A white-sand beach on the northern tip of Unguja island, a major dhow-building and tourism centre known for calm swimming waters and sunset views.
Nungwi is Zanzibar's second-largest settlement (30,762 residents at the 2022 census), on the island's northern tip about 56km from Zanzibar Town. Historically a dhow-building and fishing village, it saw hotel capacity grow 129% between 2008 and 2013 to roughly 1,000 rooms, and its main beach - nicknamed 'Jambo Square' - was named among CNN's 100 best beaches in the world in 2014. West Nungwi is now heavily developed with resorts and bars, while East Nungwi remains quieter; dala-dala minibuses connect the village to Zanzibar Town.
