Zanzibar University (ZU) opened in 1998 as the islands' first university, based in Tunguu, Central District, about 19km from Zanzibar Town. It is privately run, sponsored by the Darul Iman Charitable Association of Ontario, Canada, and grew from an initial Faculty of Business Administration into faculties covering Law and Shariah, Arts and Social Science, Science, and Engineering.
