About
Wete Old Town is a Zanzibar historic site associated with historic town, architecture.
Wete is a historic town on the west coast of northern Pemba island, capital of both Wete District and Pemba North Region, with a 2022 census population of about 35,951. Early Arab settlers called Pemba 'the Green Island,' and the island passed through the Sultanate of Oman in the 17th century before coming under British administration, with the wider region playing a role in spice-trade routes linking East Africa, India, and Arabia. Wete's harbour was historically the main port of entry for reaching Pemba, a role now shared with Mkoani further south. The town's economy has long rested on clove production, alongside fishing and livestock, with traditional dhows still sailing routes to Shimoni in Kenya and to northern Mozambique. Southwest of Wete lies Matambwe island, home to Mtambwe Kuu, the ruins of a medieval Swahili settlement.
