About
The ruined 1845-1856 palace of Mohammed bin Ahmed el Alawi, the last Mwinyi Mkuu (traditional Shirazi-descended ruler) of Unguja, on the road between Zanzibar Town and Chwaka.
The Dunga Ruins are what remains of a palace built mainly between 1845 and 1856 by Ahmed bin Mohammed el Alawi (1785-1865), the most powerful of the Mwinyi Mkuu, the traditional Shirazi-descended rulers of Unguja whose lineage stretched back to the 13th century. The palace took roughly ten years to complete and stood as the seat of the last Mwinyi Mkuu before the line died out in the late 19th century. Visitors today can still see stone thrones and water features amid the ruined walls, and the site is a gazetted national monument on the road between Zanzibar Town and Chwaka.
