About

A royal bathhouse built in 1850 by Sultan Seyyid Said in Persian architectural style for his wife Scheherezade, notable for its domed steam rooms and stone water channels.

Built in 1850 on the highest point of Zanzibar Island, the Kidichi Persian Baths were commissioned by Sultan Seyyid Said for his wife Scheherezade, granddaughter of the Persian Shah Fatah Ali. The bathhouse follows Persian design, with a high central chamber lit by a star-shaped skylight, domed steam rooms, low fountains, and stone channels that carried warm and cold water between the rooms. Persian poetry is inscribed on the interior walls. The domed bathhouses, with their deep stone baths, remain remarkably well preserved today.
