About

Fundo Island is a Zanzibar island associated with island, nature.

Fundo Island lies off the west coast of Pemba, in Fundo ward of Wete District. It is the largest of the minor islands surrounding Pemba, stretching about nine kilometres in length but barely a kilometre wide, and is surrounded by a reef. Together with the smaller Njao Island to its north, it forms a natural breakwater protecting the harbour of Wete town, six kilometres to the east. The island is home to the community of Ndooni village. In 2018 a temporary closure of local octopus fisheries was introduced to allow stocks to recover, resulting in a large increase in catches once the fishery reopened.
