Opened in 1930 as an annex of the Beit-el-Amani (Peace Memorial) Museum around Stone Town's Victoria Gardens, the Natural History Museum holds collections of Zanzibar's birds, fish, reptiles and mammals, originally assembled to teach local communities about hygiene and the natural environment. Admission to the Peace Memorial Museum across the street includes entry here, and an Arabic inscription above its door reads 'Please enter to observe strangers and wonderful things.'
