About

Kwale Island is a Zanzibar island associated with island, safari blue.

Kwale Island is a small protected island, about 0.9 km by 0.6 km, in Fumba ward off Zanzibar's western coast, within the Menai Bay Conservation Area. It is the best-known stop on the 'Safari Blue' day-tour circuit, where boats bring visitors to snorkel, look for dolphins, and relax on nearby sandbanks. The island's fringing reef has faced real environmental pressure: coral cover at Kwale fell from higher levels to 29.7% after the 1997 bleaching event and to just 13.3% following the more severe 1999 bleaching, and the area continues to see impacts from plastic pollution and destructive octopus-fishing methods.
