Parks & Nature Reserves Park Urban, Zanzibar Urban/West

About

A public seafront park in Stone Town facing the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, known by day as a public garden and by evening as an open-air street-food market.

Forodhani Gardens began life as Jubilee Gardens, laid out in 1936 to mark the silver jubilee of Sultan Khalifa bin Harub, and was renamed after the 1964 revolution for the nearby Forodhani customs house. The park sits on Mizingani Road facing the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, and underwent a major restoration led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture that broke ground in 2009. Shaded benches and sea walls make it a quiet daytime retreat, while after sunset its central square turns into Stone Town's best-known street-food market, with stalls grilling seafood skewers, Zanzibari pizza and cassava chips.
