About
Tazari Caves is a Zanzibar natural site associated with cave, cultural site.
Tazari Caves, close to Tazari village on Zanzibar's northern peninsula near Nungwi and Kendwa, are described as the largest limestone caves on the island. Inside, large cone-shaped stalactites and stalagmites formed by dripping mineral-rich water over thousands of years. Local guides recount that the caves were used as hiding places during the slave-trade era, pointing to old broken chains as evidence, though this history is passed down locally rather than formally documented. The caves are also home to a large colony of bats that can be seen streaming out of the entrance at sunset, and because the passages are extensive, visits are only done with a guide.
