About
Amboni-like Fukuchani Cave is a Zanzibar natural site associated with cave, natural site.
Despite its name evoking the larger Amboni Caves on the Tanzanian mainland, this site is the limestone cave attached to the Fukuchani Ruins, a national monument about 12km south of Nungwi. The ruins are the remains of a 16th-century coral-rag fortified residence, popularly called the 'Portuguese House' though archaeologists believe it was more likely built for a wealthy local merchant or farmer in the Shirazi or early Swahili period, with later Portuguese-influenced additions. The adjoining cave holds a freshwater lake for swimming and snorkelling, with submerged stalagmites and coral rock visible beneath the surface, and is naturally lit by light filtering through its entrance.
