Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA)

About
The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar's statutory authority responsible for urban and rural water supply across Unguja and Pemba.
ZAWA was established in 2006 under Zanzibar's Water Act No. 4 of 2006 as the semi-autonomous authority responsible for supplying clean water across Unguja and Pemba, and remains the islands' sole public water utility. It manages a network that, as of 2020, included more than 315 government-owned boreholes alongside wells run by public institutions, businesses and private owners, plus several natural springs and caves used as water sources. Water was supplied free of charge for 25 years from 1982, and ZAWA has since had to build tariff-collection systems to fund maintenance and expansion of the network.
