Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO)

Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO) is the state-owned utility that transmits and distributes electricity across the Zanzibar Archipelago, headquartered on Gulioni Street. It was incorporated in 2006 as successor to the State Fuel and Power Corporation, which had managed the islands' power stations since 1964. Zanzibar's electrification dates to the 1870s, when a coal-fired generator first lit Stone Town; Unguja was linked to the Tanzanian mainland grid by a 132kV submarine cable in 1980, while Pemba runs on its own interconnector after decades of diesel generation from the Wesha power station.
