About

A house built around 1860 for Sultan Majid bin Said in Stone Town's Kinazini quarter, used as a staging base by European explorers and missionaries — including David Livingstone before his final expedition in 1866, along with Burton, Speke, Cameron and Stanley.

Built around 1860 for Sultan Majid bin Said in Stone Town's Kinazini waterfront quarter, Livingstone House was made available for David Livingstone's use from January to March 1866 as he prepared his final expedition into the African interior. Over the following decades it served the same staging-post role for other explorers and missionaries, including Burton, Speke, Cameron and Stanley. In the early 20th century the house passed to Zanzibar's Indian community, before the colonial government purchased it in 1947 and converted it into a laboratory for clove-disease research. After independence it became the headquarters of the Zanzibar Tourist Corporation.
