About

Aga Khan Mosque Zanzibar is a Zanzibar historic site associated with mosque, architecture.

The Aga Khan Mosque, also known as the Ismaili Jamatkhana, stands in the Kiponda area of Stone Town and is one of the largest mosques in Zanzibar. The first Nizari Ismaili Jamatkhana in Zanzibar was established in the 1830s, during the time of Imam Hasan Ali Shah, with the appointment of local mukhis and kamadias to lead the community. The present building was substantially rebuilt and expanded in 1905, and was formally inaugurated by Imam Sultan Mahomed Shah (the Aga Khan) on 16 August 1905 โ€” making it the first darkhana (a Jamatkhana of special status) in Africa. Architecturally it combines Gothic and Islamic characteristics, and its entrance features carved wooden doors in the Gujarati style with coffered panels. The mosque has served Zanzibar's Ismaili community continuously since 1905.
