About
Bawe Island is a Zanzibar island associated with island, snorkelling.
Bawe Island (Kisiwa cha Bawe in Swahili) is a small island in the Zanzibar Channel about 10 km offshore from Stone Town, measuring roughly 1.1 km long and 0.4 km wide. In the late 19th century, Sultan Barghash ibn Sa'id gave the island to the Eastern Telegraph Company, which used it as an operating station for the undersea telegraph cable linking Zanzibar to Seychelles and Aden; the arrangement was renewed by Sultan Khalifa ibn Sa'id in 1889 when Cable & Wireless took over and built staff housing there. Once a telecommunications outpost, the island's role has since shifted entirely to tourism, and it is inhabited primarily by people of the Hadimu ethnic group.
