About
Mizingani Seafront is a Zanzibar cultural site associated with scenic promenade, historic waterfront.
Mizingani Road is Stone Town's main seafront promenade, running along the harbour and lined with some of the island's most significant 19th-century royal and institutional buildings. Its landmarks include the House of Wonders, built in 1883 as a ceremonial palace and restored after damage in the 1896 Anglo-Zanzibar War; the Sultan's Palace, built on the site of an earlier palace (Beit al-Sahel) destroyed in that same 1896 conflict; and the Old Dispensary, constructed between 1887 and 1894 as a charitable hospital. Together these buildings make Mizingani Road one of the principal architectural showcases of Stone Town's harbourfront.
