About
Old Slave Market and Anglican Cathedral is a Zanzibar historic site associated with slave-trade history, church.
Christ Church Cathedral (the Anglican Cathedral) stands on the site of Stone Town's former open slave market, which was closed in 1873 after Britain pressed Sultan Barghash to sign an abolition treaty. The Church Missionary Society, led by Bishop Edward Steere, built the cathedral over the site between 1873 and 1879, positioning the high altar over the location of the former whipping post as a deliberate symbol of emancipation. Its Saracenic design blends Zanzibari, Middle Eastern and Victorian Gothic influences, built mainly of coral stone with a concrete barrel-vaulted roof; it was consecrated in 1903 and named after Canterbury Cathedral. A crucifix on display is made from wood of the tree under which explorer David Livingstone's heart was buried in Zambia. The site today includes exhibits recounting the history of the East African slave trade.
