About
A privately-managed marine and forest reserve on a small coral island roughly 12km south of Stone Town, protecting one of East Africa's most pristine fringing reefs and a coral rag forest, alongside an eco-lodge run on renewable energy.
Chumbe Island Coral Park is run by Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd (CHICOP), a private company set up in 1991 that turned the island into a marine reserve in 1994, one of the first of its kind in East Africa. Its fringing reef holds an unusually high diversity of marine life, with 474 recorded reef fish species and populations of blacktip reef sharks, and coral taxonomist J.E.N. Veron described its coral gardens after a 1997 visit as among the most spectacular he had seen anywhere. The reef is also an important feeding ground for endangered green turtles and critically endangered hawksbill turtles, alongside the coral rag forest and solar-powered eco-lodge on the island.
