About

People's Palace Museum is a Zanzibar museum associated with palace, museum.

Also known as Beit al-Sahel, this seafront Stone Town palace was rebuilt in the late 19th century as a residence for the Sultan's family after an earlier palace on the site was destroyed by British bombardment in 1896. Renamed the People's Palace after the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, it served as government offices until 1994, when it was converted into a museum of the sultanate, with floors devoted to Sultan Khalifa bin Harub and to Princess Salme, later known as Emily Ruete.
