About
Mangapwani Slave Chambers is a Zanzibar historic site associated with slave-trade history, cave.
The Mangapwani Slave Chamber is a cave-based holding site near Mangapwani village on the west coast of Unguja island, roughly 2km from where boats once landed. It was built around 1880 by Mohammed bin Nassor Al-Alwi, a prominent slave trader, who carved a square cell into the coralline rock and topped it with a roof to hold captives brought from the mainland before their onward sale in Zanzibar Town or transport to plantation labour. After the 1873 Anglo-Zanzibari treaty, signed by Sultan Barghash, formally ended the legal slave trade, the chamber continued to be used covertly to conceal illegally trafficked people, reportedly until around 1905. Today it stands as one of the physical reminders of Zanzibar's role in, and eventual formal abolition of, the East African slave trade.
