About
A natural coral cave and an adjoining manmade chamber on Zanzibar's northwest coast, used to conceal enslaved people during and after the East African slave trade's official abolition in 1873.
Mangapwani, whose name means 'Arabian Shore' in Swahili, lies on Unguja's northwest coast north of Stone Town. Its shoreline holds a natural coral cavern and, nearby, a square manmade chamber cut into the coralline rock, attributed to the slave trader Mohammed bin Nassor al-Alwi. After Sultan Barghash signed the 1873 Anglo-Zanzibari treaty officially abolishing the slave trade, the chamber was used to hide enslaved people as an illicit trade continued in secret for years afterward, making the site a stark record of the trade's persistence past formal abolition.
