About
Mangapwani Beach is a Zanzibar beach associated with named beach.
Mangapwani Beach lies on Zanzibar's western coast about 20 km north of Zanzibar Town, next to the village of Mangapwani ('Arab Shore' in Swahili). The beach is best known as the access point for the Mangapwani Slave Chamber, a square cell cut into coralline rock that was used to hold enslaved people before their sale or transport, and for a separate natural Coral Cave nearby with a freshwater pool at its lowest point. Historic accounts describe boats from the mainland unloading captives directly onto this beach before they were marched inland.
