A long, wide stretch of white sand on Unguja's northeast coast between Pongwe and Pwani Mchangani, backed by low dunes and one of the island's densest concentrations of beach resorts; the sand shelves gently and the tide retreats a long way at low water, as along most of this coast.
Kiwengwa is a village on Unguja's northeast coast, positioned between Pongwe and Pwani Mchangani with a road running about 8km inland to Kinyasini. It has become one of Zanzibar's most resort-dense stretches of coastline, with the wide, gently shelving beach - like others on this coast - losing much of its water at low tide. Published documentation of the village beyond its geography is thin; the Rough Guide to Zanzibar remains one of the few printed references to it.
