About

Shamiani Island is a Zanzibar island associated with island, nature.

Shamiani Island, also known as Kiweni, is a protected historic site in Mkoani District off the southern coast of Pemba island. It holds partially excavated, abandoned Swahili ruins built of coral rag, occupied from roughly the 14th to the 16th century before being abandoned. Today the island is home to about 150 fishing and subsistence-farming families and a small rustic eco-lodge geared toward responsible tourism. Its reef and drop-off diving, snorkeling, birdlife and sea-turtle nesting grounds make it a low-key destination alongside its archaeological history.
