About

Dunga Palace Ruins is a Zanzibar historic site associated with palace ruins, heritage site.

Dunga Palace Ruins, in Dunga village on Unguja island, are what remains of the residence built for Muhammad bin Ahmed al-Alawi (also known as Sultan Hamadi or King Muhamadi), the last-but-one in a long line of traditional rulers of Unguja known as the Mwinyi Mkuu ('Great Lord'), who claimed Shirazi descent. Construction took about ten years, mainly between 1845 and 1856, after he moved his capital from Mbweni to Dunga. The Mwinyi Mkuu's authority was felt across most of Unguja during his rule, though it was increasingly overshadowed by the rising power of the Omani Sultans based in Zanzibar Town. He died in 1865, and the line of the Mwinyi Mkuu died out later in the 19th century. Today the ruins stand among tall trees, with visible remnants of stone thrones and water features hinting at the opulence of the site in its prime.
