About

A village on Unguja's south-central coast, between Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park and Menai Bay, whose residents run a community-based cultural tourism programme — guided walks through the village, local craft demonstrations and homestead visits — usually combined with a visit to the adjoining Jozani forest.

The name Pete means 'ring' in Swahili. Community-guided visits here typically include a stop at a traditional healer's cave and the story of the village's 'Well of Jealousy', along with an oxcart ride and a look at everyday rural life. Entrance fees paid by visitors go toward preserving the surrounding forest reserve, and the village is also home to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre, said to be East Africa's largest butterfly aviary and itself a community income project.
