About
A butterfly farm and forest walk in Pete village next to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, run as a community conservation project.
The Zanzibar Butterfly Centre sits in Pete village, about a kilometre from Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, and is run as a cooperative with roughly 40 local farmers who breed butterflies for the enclosure as an alternative livelihood to forest exploitation. Its netted garden is one of the largest butterfly exhibits in Africa, and guided visits of around 30 to 40 minutes walk visitors through the butterfly life cycle while explaining the conservation case for protecting the surrounding forest.
