About
Kidike Flying Fox Sanctuary is a Zanzibar natural site associated with wildlife sanctuary, community conservation.
Kidike Root Site, around 10km northeast of Chake Chake on Pemba Island, protects the largest known roosting colony of the Pemba flying fox (Pteropus voeltzkowi), Africa's largest fruit bat with a wingspan of up to 1.6 metres and Pemba's only endemic mammal. Villagers have managed the site through their own community organisation since 1992, helping the population recover from around 200 individuals in the early 1990s to an estimated 12,000 today. The colony has thrived partly because it roosts near a local burial ground that is traditionally left undisturbed. Visitors typically arrange a guide in advance, especially outside peak season.
