About

Tumbatu Island is a Zanzibar island associated with island, cultural tours.

Tumbatu Island, in Fumba ward of Kaskazini A District, is the third-largest island of the Zanzibar Archipelago after Pemba and Unguja, measuring about 10.14 km long and 3 km wide, with two small islets, Popo Island and Mwana wa Mwana Island, nearby. It has two main settlements: Jongowe village at the southern end and the town of Kichangani (also known as Gomani) at the north. Archaeological evidence shows human settlement going back roughly 2,000 years, and between about 1100 and 1300 AD Tumbatu was a significant Indian Ocean trading centre, with Jongowe flourishing as a town from around 1150 to 1250 AD before declining after Portuguese arrival and later Omani rule. The island is the traditional home of the Tumbatu people, a Hadimu sub-group who speak Swahili, and a historic stone lighthouse stands on its northern tip.
