About

A 16th-century fortified coral-stone house and adjoining limestone cave in Fukuchani village, roughly 12km south of Nungwi; locally called the "Portuguese House" though archaeologists now think it was more likely a fortified Swahili or Shirazi-era merchant's residence later remodelled in a Portuguese style. A gazetted National Monument.

The Fukuchani Ruins, on the edge of Fukuchani village 12km south of Nungwi, are the remains of a 16th-century coral-rag fortified house, locally called the 'Portuguese House.' Archaeologists now believe it was more likely built for a wealthy Shirazi or Swahili merchant on an earlier settlement site and later remodelled in a Portuguese architectural style. The building has pointed stone arches and gun slits in its gatehouse walls, and its large internal courtyard contains a well-preserved freshwater well that would have let occupants withstand a siege. An adjoining limestone cave holds stalactites, stalagmites and a freshwater lake used today for swimming. The site is a gazetted National Monument.
