About

A stone lighthouse at the northern tip of Unguja island in Nungwi, first built in 1881 and relit in its current form in 1926; the oldest lighthouse on the island, a 14-metre, three-stage square tower with a red lantern, still operated by the Zanzibar Ports Corporation with a 13-nautical-mile range.

Standing at Ras Nungwi (also known as Hog Point) on Unguja's northern tip, this is the oldest lighthouse on the island, first built in 1881. The current 14-metre, three-stage square stone tower is painted white with a red lantern, and its light was relit in its present form in 1926, with a focal height of 18 metres and a range of 13 nautical miles, flashing white every 5 seconds. It is still operated by the Zanzibar Ports Corporation and remains a landmark for boats rounding the island's northern point.
