Essque Zalu Zanzibar occupies a coral cliff in Nungwi on the island's northern tip, a departure from the typical sandy-beach resort setting, and is topped by what's billed as the highest thatched makuti roof on the island. Its roughly 40 suites mix contemporary and Swahili design, and the resort has several restaurants including cliffside dining, an outdoor pool and a spa. Diving, snorkelling and windsurfing are available on site, with Kendwa's beaches a short drive away.
