About
Kiwengwa Caves is a Zanzibar natural site associated with cave, geological site.
The Kiwengwa Caves form Zanzibar's largest limestone cave system, hidden within the Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest Reserve on the island's northeast coast โ the last significant stretch of high coral rag forest in the north of Unguja. Stalactites and stalagmites formed as water dissolved calcium carbonate in the coral rock, and natural skylights let light filter into the chambers. The caves have had several uses over time: locally they were once a site for leaving offerings to ancestors, later a place where wealthy islanders reportedly kept leopards, and towards the end of Zanzibar's slave trade they were used to hold people awaiting transfer. Guided visits usually last 30 to 60 minutes and are often paired with a walk through the surrounding forest reserve.
