About
Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest Reserve is a Zanzibar natural site associated with forest reserve, caves.
The Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve is a coral-rag forest on Unguja's north-east coast, about 20 km from Zanzibar Town. This coral-rag ecosystem has been under pressure from timber extraction since the 1970s, but the reserve still supports around 100 recorded plant species (including many used medicinally) and fauna such as the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, Aders's duiker, Sykes and blue monkeys, sunni antelope, and 47 recorded bird species including Fischer's turaco. The reserve also contains the Mchekeni Coral Caves, a stalactite-and-stalagmite cave system that shelters bats and pythons and is open to guided tourist visits.
