Mangapwani Coral Cave

Parks & Nature Reserves Attraction North B, Unguja North

About

A natural limestone cave with a freshwater pool roughly 2km south of Mangapwani village on Unguja's northwest coast, historically used as a source of drinking water and now a swimming and snorkelling spot; a separate site from the Mangapwani Slave Caves already listed here, a few kilometres away on the same stretch of coast.

Mangapwani, meaning 'Arab shore' in Swahili, lies about 20km north of Zanzibar Town, and the Coral Cave here is a deep natural cavern reached through a narrow entrance and a series of interconnected chambers, descending to a freshwater pool at its lowest point. The cave was originally used by local people as a source of drinking water, and local historians have suggested it may also have served as a hiding place for people fleeing the slave trade in the years after its official 1873 abolition. Visiting involves navigating rock-cut ladders and narrow passages, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
